Dubai unveils AI-powered digital twin

Dubai has launched an AI-powered digital twin platform that creates a virtual replica of the emirate, providing a powerful new tool to support emergency preparedness, fire safety planning and the management of critical infrastructure.

Developed by Dubai Municipality, the Dubai Digital Twin Platform digitally recreates more than 195,000 buildings, 280,000 infrastructure assets and 330,000 public facilities. Bringing together detailed 3D models with real-time data, the platform enables government entities to simulate future scenarios, assess risks and make faster, more informed decisions before implementing changes on the ground.

The initiative was unveiled during the ‘Partners in Building the Digital Twin’ workshop, attended by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai.

For the fire and life safety sector, digital twin technology has the potential to transform how cities prepare for emergencies. Fire services and civil defence organisations can use virtual models to simulate fire incidents, assess evacuation strategies, identify access challenges for emergency vehicles and evaluate how fires or hazardous events could affect surrounding buildings and infrastructure.

The technology can also support the planning of new developments by helping authorities understand how building layouts, road networks and population growth may influence emergency response times and operational resilience. As urban environments become increasingly complex, these digital simulations offer an opportunity to test contingency plans and improve coordination without disrupting day-to-day operations.

The platform is part of Dubai’s wider smart city strategy, which aims to harness artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies to improve public services and support sustainable urban growth.

As cities across the Middle East continue to expand vertically and accommodate growing populations, digital twin technology is expected to play an increasingly important role in helping fire authorities and urban planners build safer, more resilient communities while improving preparedness for the emergencies of tomorrow.
