The annual award recognises exceptional Bachelor’s and Master’s theses, as well as doctoral dissertations, that explore new developments in fire safety. Applications are open until 27 August 2026, with winners announced at FOGTEC’s headquarters in Cologne on 27 November 2026.
Named in honour of Ernst Achilles, a pioneer in preventive fire protection who played a significant role in developing modern standards for fire service emergency rescue, the award aims to encourage innovation while supporting the next generation of fire safety professionals.
Entries will be judged by a panel of industry experts, with particular emphasis placed on both academic quality and the practical value of the research. Prize money of €2,500, €1,500 and €750 will be awarded to the top three submissions.
As the fire sector continues to evolve in response to new technologies, changing regulations and emerging risks, initiatives such as the Ernst-Achilles-Preis play an important role in encouraging fresh thinking and attracting talented graduates into the profession. Many of today’s industry leaders began their careers in research, making academic innovation an important driver of future advances in fire protection.
Applications can be submitted via the Ernst-Achilles-Preis website until 27 August 2026.
