Tech expert warns of lithium-ion battery risks

Lithium-ion battery fires are on the rise, with fire brigades called to 1,760 fires in 2025, an increase of 147 per cent over the past three years, reports The Guardian.

Many people have lithium-ion batteries in their homes without even realising it, and recent Google searches prove it.

According to the global searches for ‘what are lithium-ion batteries in’, this trend has increased by 95 per cent in the past month alone.

Experts at Mouser Electronics, have since explained the typical faults with lithium-ion batteries and four common products that contain them.

Mark Patrick, Director of Technical Content at Mouser Electronics, explained: “From mobile phones and electric toothbrushes to e-scooters and electric vehicles, most rechargeable devices are powered by lithium-ion batteries.

“One of the common issues with lithium-ion batteries is overcharging. When people use an aftermarket or non-compatible charger, this can cause overcurrent, overvoltage, or sometimes a combination of both. During a typical overcharge fault, the cell temperature rises, increasing the risk of a fire, which is why it’s essential to never leave your device unattended or charging on a non-heat-proof surface.

“Other issues around lithium-ion batteries are high discharge current faults, which again can cause overheating, and voltage transients, which can be triggered by lightning and other high-voltage events.

“To mitigate these issues, product developers conduct extensive product testing, ensure the batteries meet specification requirements, and adhere to safety standards such as IEC62281, so battery systems have the protection they need for high performance.”

Patrick went on to share five types of devices powered by lithium-ion batteries and how to mitigate the risks associated with them.

  1. Smart devices

Mobile phones, tablets, and fitness watches are common household items.

To protect yourself and the batteries from damage, the expert says it’s important to avoid overcharging these devices, don’t allow the battery to drain to 0 per cent, as this can impact overall battery health, and only use certified chargers.

  1. Cordless Power Tools

Common tools such as cordless drills, hedge trimmers, and sanders contain lithium-ion batteries. It’s important to ensure these products are charged in safe heat-resistant locations, turned off when not in use, and allowed to cool down when overheating, as cordless power tools are among the most susceptible devices for overcharge faults.

  1. Battery-powered toys

Toys, including remote-controlled cars, boats, or planes, can overheat and pose a fire hazard if they’re not used or charged correctly. Most modern gaming consoles and handheld controllers also contain lithium-ion batteries, so it’s important to avoid charging them overnight.

  1. Electric Vacuum Cleaners 

Handheld and robot vacuums are becoming increasingly common in households, with more updated models being released. Some modern models now have replaceable battery packs, allowing you to remove them whilst they’re charging or replace them if they’re damaged.  

  1. Powered transport

Electric scooters and e-bikes demand high-power charging, which can cause the battery to overheat and combust. To reduce this risk, avoid exposure to extreme temperatures, charge the battery when stationary, ensure it’s stored correctly, and regularly inspect the product for any signs of wear and tear.
