NFPA appoints John Bonney as new Board Chair

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has announced a new leadership team following the election of its Board of Directors at the organisation’s 2026 Annual Meeting, with experienced fire and rescue leader John Bonney taking on the role of Board Chair.

Bonney, who has served on the NFPA Board of Directors since 2015 and previously held the position of First Vice Chair, was elected by fellow board members during the meeting on 22 June. He succeeds Dave Paulison, who has completed his second two-year term as Board Chair after leading the organisation through a period of continued focus on global fire, electrical and life safety.

Bringing more than 30 years of experience in the fire and rescue sector, Bonney is well known internationally for his leadership within the profession. He previously served as President of the UK Chief Fire Officers Association and as Chief Fire Officer of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. Throughout his career he has also held a range of national resilience, governance and advisory positions in both the UK and overseas. In recognition of his contribution to the fire and rescue service, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2015.

As Board Chair, Bonney will work alongside the NFPA’s executive leadership team and fellow directors to help guide the association’s strategic direction and support its mission of advancing fire, electrical and life safety around the world.

The organisation also confirmed its officer appointments for the new term. Roger Montembeault was elected First Vice Chair, Butch Browning was named Second Vice Chair, Lou Paulson will serve as Secretary, Reggie Freeman as Treasurer and Denis Onieal as Assistant Treasurer. Paulison will remain involved as Immediate Past Chair.

In addition, NFPA members elected Michael P. Ryan and Michael Snyder to the Board, while Brigadier General Mohamed Abdullah Al-Nuaimi, of the Civil Defense General Headquarters at the Ministry of the Interior in Abu Dhabi, UAE, was re-elected to serve a second three-year term, maintaining strong Middle East representation on the organisation’s governing body.
