Station closed for 5 hours

Commuters who regularly use London’s busiest railway junction at Clapham had a fortunate escape when a fire caused it to be closed for more than five hours.

That was because the blaze in a nearby industrial estate which created dense clouds of smoke did not break out until shortly before 11 o’clock in the evening.

It took 15 fire engines and 100 firefighters more than six hours to get the fire in a range of eight single storey industrial units under control.

But they succeeded in time for the railways lines to re-open in the early hours of the morning and provide transport for thousands of workers from the South East of England to get to their jobs in London.
