At least 37 people were killed and 140 more suffered injuries when a when fire ripped through a hospital in the South Korean city of Milyang.

The blaze was suspected to have start in the first floor emergency room of the facility which has mainly dealt with elderly patients and was reported not to have been protected by a fire sprinkler system.

Three members of the hospital staff – a doctor, a nurse and a nursing assistant – were listed among the victims along with many patients who were already in an intensive care suffering from respiratory illness when they were overcome by smoke.
