Fatal fire in Qatar

A fire in South Western Qatar which ripped through a camp housing labourers working on a waterfront tourism project killed 11 people and injured 19 others.

The cause of the blaze has yet to be identified but pictures put online showed charcoal black smoke rising hundreds of feet into the air. However, firefighters manage to prevent it spreading beyond the camp.

A vast number of migrant labourers are currently working in Qatar building the infrastructure needed to stage football’s World Cup in 2022, but there has been criticism of their living conditions.

Last August in a labout camp fire 450 workers lost their passports and possessions, while in February an Indian worker was killed in a fire which ripped through a camp in the town of Al-Sheehinya.
