Cruise ship report

Investigators say they have found the fire source on the French cruise ship La Boreal that led to a rare passenger evacuation at sea near the Falkland Islands last November.
The fire in the engine room left the ship drifting without propulsion and, with the help of the British Navy337 passengers and crew were evacuated.
Now nine months later French investigators say the fire was caused by a ship’s officer who mis-identified a clogged fuel filter.
When he mistakenly tried to change a nearby filter that was unclogged, fuel oil sprayed onto a hot engine part causing a fire that eventually spread through copper cables from the engine compartment.
According to the report, the night watch did not have a mechanic’s rating now the cruise company has banned anyone from working alone at night on the fuel feeding line.
